Bridging The Gap

This week was the students first week at their new placement.

With Blake on facilities down at MMU covering the entire campus with maintenance work, Solomon in the Costa café working fast pace serving and prepping for the thousands of students, and Kyle over at the SODA building, stripping, and preparing studios for live gigs and lectures as well as learning all the technical formalities.

The students have absolutely smashed this week, with nothing but praise from there supervisors. They jumped in headfirst, overcoming there worries and working in a busy thriving environment. We are so excited for the rest of the term. Solomon has mastered the till three days able to serve people by himself. Blake has used a drill to take down things and replace them and has walked miles with a dolly tuck fully loaded. Kyle has completed all induction criteria and set up the large sound studio speakers and surround system ready for a live open evening. It’s exciting!

English Update

Since the beginning of the academic year, pupils have been completing baseline assessments in the form of BKSB assessments and practice papers. From this, pupils have then worked with their teachers to set academic targets for the rest of the half-term, in line with their reading level. Additionally, pupils have also started to research possible topics for their speaking and listening assessments. So far, we have had a plethora of imaginative topics and ideas, ranging from transport and gaming to war and politics.

Pupils have also been celebrating national comic book day and have been challenged to create comic strips of their own, reflecting upon their first few weeks at the college. Some examples of the pupil’s comic strips are attached below. We have loved seeing some of their reflections, in colourful comic book style!

As a department, we cannot express how delighted we are with all our pupils, both old and new. They have settled into their new classes perfectly and have displayed a hardworking, positive attitude throughout. We are so excited to see what they will achieve this year!

Have a lovely weekend everyone,

Chloe and Abbie

Maths

It’s been a fantastic start to the new academic year and in our maths sessions our students have already produced some amazing work and more importantly, their attitudes and enthusiasm for learning has been outstanding.

The first couple of weeks was all about assessments and baseline work. Which included a mixture of paper and online assessments. And have given the students a strong platform to see how they can progress over the year.

Next, we have covered place value and rounding to the nearest 10’s and 100’s. Work has included portioning numbers, into the correct units and using number strategies to round numbers correctly. Higher level students working with all of these, place value (including decimals) and addition and subtraction method reminders.
