Community Living Update... Making a Difference in Our Community
The Community Living Group here at Newbridge College have been busy developing a range of practical skills both in college and out in the local community.
One of the highlights of the term so far was our involvement in the Macmillan Coffee Morning fundraising event last week. Students took on a leading role in co-hosting the event, working together to plan and prepare for the day. They cooked a variety of items to sell, discussed pricing to ensure products were affordable while maximising fundraising opportunities, and designed and ran a range of fundraising games for visitors to enjoy. The event provided excellent opportunities to develop communication, teamwork, problem-solving and money-handling skills in a real-life setting.
We are delighted to announce that the event raised an incredible £174.67 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Students should be extremely proud of their efforts and the positive contribution they have made to such an important cause.
As part of our work on community awareness and independence, students have also been exploring their local environment. During visits within the local area, they have been considering both the positives and negatives of the immediate surroundings, discussing topics such as accessibility, local facilities, cleanliness, transport links and opportunities available within the community. These activities have encouraged students to think critically about the places they live and how communities can be improved.
Students have also visited a Community Involvement Hub, where they had the opportunity to meet new people, take part in conversations and interact with members of the wider community. The visit helped to build confidence, develop social skills and raise awareness of the support, activities and opportunities available locally.
Throughout these experiences, students have continued to demonstrate enthusiasm, maturity and a willingness to engage with new challenges. It has been fantastic to see their confidence grow as they work collaboratively, contribute to their community and develop the skills needed for greater independence.
We are incredibly proud of everything the group has achieved and look forward to sharing more of their successes in our next update.
