Mrs T's Blog (29.11.24)

Here we are in the last week of November. And what a busy week it’s been...

On Wednesday we opened our door to parents and carers. I think it’s been one of THE busiest parents’ evenings we have run since before Covid.

I was fortunate to meet some parents, speak to students and to staff. I want to share some of the feedback we got from the night.

I always thought being in the army was the hardest job, but I think your job is even harder. I know my son enjoys school, because he comes home and cannot wait to tell me about it.

Three years ago, my son came into this school from a mainstream primary not able to read and write. The fact he can now retell and write Shakespeare is amazing.

What you have done in the past two years has really changed our life for the better, we now feel like we can live again. You have given him lots of new skills which he can use to help us at home and himself and we cannot thank you and your team enough, this for us is life changing.

He was not accessing the classroom at primary and he would not engage and showed lots of challenges but now I am so happy to see him happy and working on new skills and making progress which is so lovely for us as a family. We have also seen changed at home where he is asking to go to the Lego shop in Manchester which for him can be difficult due to busy environments and noise, but we feel like he can tolerate this more now and we can do things as a family which is so nice.

From my staff team:

Mum told me last night that since September she now mentions when she has food. She is asking her mum to try new foods, especially different fruits and vegetables. She has also been telling her mum if a food is healthy or not healthy. Mum is really happy she is communicating more and wanting to try new foods

Another good news story from my staff team is regarding a student in year 7, who has learnt how to construct a text or what’s app message safely and effectively.

Something they couldn’t do before.

All in all, a really productive, informative evening.

On Friday I had the privilege of meeting our newly formed School Council. This Council has come together following a voting process throughout the school. It was the highlight of my week. But I do think there was an alternative reason for getting me in the room.

The Council handed me a petition with 200 names of staff and students. The Council asked me to re-think the date of the start of our Christmas celebrations and in particular – the decorations. I have to think carefully about Christmas – not because I’m Mrs Scrooge (my family and friends will tell you far from it ) but simply because for some of our learners, this is a difficult time .

So the Council and I came to a compromise.

Christmas will begin – officially at Roman Road on Friday 6th December.

The Council have done their research and as a consequence of this – we will begin to slowly put up our decorations.

The Council also insisted on no flashing lights, so although the school will look lovely – we will not be having lights that may distract learners.

That’s it for this week.

Next week is looking to be equally as busy. On Monday – we have visitors from the rest of the Trust looking at what goes on at Roman Road and myself and the senior team will be out and about looking at the brilliant learning that goes on in our school.

Hope everyone has a brilliant week

Stay safe
