The Employability Group continues to access external and internal work experience placements.
Some students enjoy and will regularly offer to do an extra session if another student is absent. Others now attend internal placements as they want to eventually work with younger, or less abled students themselves. The internal places are proving very successful and students from other groups are now requesting a chance to attend these also. Currently the internal places consist of classroom support; horticulture; supporting in outdoor education sessions; and supporting youngsters in the onsite nursery.
Our external placements are to the local food bank where our students prepare food bags for people who then request a food back to help them with their weekly shop. The students are given a list of what each customer has requested, and they fill the bags accordingly. The only complaint here that the students have is how cold it is working there. They always make sure they are well wrapped up for this placement!
The other external placement is for the Atrium café. Students help to prepare different food, and they also serve customers, taking their order and then delivering the food to their table. This placement always goes down well as the students are rewarded with a healthy meal and dessert if there is any left over at the end of their session.
Two males in our group have both voiced that they want to work in the catering industry. Although one is certain he wants to be a chef, the other has not fully decided what it is he’d like to do in the catering industry.
We’re sure that the successes within our group, and with the other students, will continue for the remainder of the school year.
