Go New Bridge Barkers… Go!

This week the New Bridge Barkers (a combination of young people from New Bridge Pathways and New Bridge College) played their first official Esport British Champs match. This Spring Term, we have entered the Rocket League Student Champs Open 2024-25.

Round 1 (best out of 5) - New Bridge Barkers Vs Bromsgrove School

Our team was pumped before kick-off with a prep talk from Coaches Charlie and Brendan (with the Rocky theme playing in the background).

Match 1 – not the start we were hoping for, we were beaten 4 – 0. However, it was our first game!

A massive well done to New Bridge Barkers players, coaches and technical support.

An amazing display of resilience from the team. Even when we went two matches down, our young people worked strongly together, kept their chins up and kept going. Thank you to all involved… bring on Round 2!

Destiny photo project “Joining up Oldham”

This week Destiny photographers were asked to create a photo collage inspired by Hockney’s "Joiners," combining multiple images to form a single composite work.

Our Destiny photographers had to choose a subject in Oldham town centre and take multiple photos of the chosen the subject from various perspectives and distances.

HSC

This week, our students have been working hard to complete their BTEC coursework, focusing on communication in health and social care. Communication is a vital skill in this field, as it helps professionals build relationships, provide effective care, and support individuals in need.

As part of their studies, students explored both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques. Verbal communication involves speaking clearly, using appropriate language, and showing empathy, while non-verbal communication includes body language, facial expressions, and gestures. Understanding these elements is crucial for ensuring effective interactions with patients, colleagues, and service users.

To put their learning into practice, students engaged in role-play activities based on real-life health and social care scenarios. These activities allowed them to step into the shoes of healthcare professionals, demonstrating skills such as active listening, maintaining eye contact, and responding sensitively to different situations. Whether acting as a nurse communicating with a patient or a social worker supporting a client, students gained hands-on experience in applying their knowledge.

The role-play tasks not only improved their confidence but also highlighted the importance of adaptability and empathy in communication. By reflecting on their performances, students identified strengths and areas for improvement, helping them refine their skills for future careers.

Overall, it has been a productive and insightful week, with students developing essential communication skills that will serve them well in their professional journeys. Well done to everyone for their dedication and effort!

Maths

“Oh No!” “I can’t do this,” “I don’t want to do this.”

These are just a couple of the comments from our students when we started the fresh term with a new topic: TIME. However, we persevered and gave the subject a good go. Our lessons have included converting time using analogue and digital formats. Reading and recording time in date formats and completing exam style questions on durations of and elapsed time. This can be a very tricky topics for some of our students and their feedback at the start of the topic was to be expected but the feedback now is a lot more positive.

Edward said, “I like how I have learnt different ways to tell the time.”

Andrew commented “I think time is cool I like that I know how I can check the time on my phone.”

Shannon said, “I can see the differences when writing 24hr and 12hr times”.

Going forward, we are going to be covering measurements and data but will keep revisiting the topic.
