GMP workshop at New Bridge and Future Finders Colleges
This week, New Bridge College and Future Finders Employability College had the pleasure of inviting back Greater Manchester Police (GMP). Andrew Bigland from GMP delivered an engaging online safety workshop. Packed with practical tips and real-life scenarios, the session educated students on cyberbullying, sexting, identity theft, online harassment, and Knife Crime.
Through interactive discussions and activities, students explored key laws like the Malicious Communications Act and the Protection of Children Act. Andrew emphasized the importance of privacy settings, password updates, and reporting concerns to trusted adults or CEOP.
Andrew’s advice included:
o Block and report harmful content.
o Avoid sharing personal details or images.
o Speak up if something feels wrong.
o Regularly manage privacy settings.
The students’ enthusiasm was infectious, with excellent behaviour throughout. Maryam from Future Finders stood out with her curiosity and constant questions. Here are some examples of feedback that our students wanted to share;
"Most interesting talk I have had in a while, helped me understand the importance and tips of staying safe on social media." - Ben (Lumenus)
“I learned loads about things I never knew.” – Maia ( HSC)
“I just loved it, it was very informative”.- Ciara ( Future Finders)
"The Importance of Online Safety is to protect you from any potential threats or getting stalked by random strangers you might think are good people." – Dekon (Lumenus)
“I thought the police visit was amazing and very informative and I liked how they shared different stories of people that have had issues online and public”. – Jessica (Lumenus)
This workshop highlighted the emotional and legal consequences of online exploitation, equipping students with tools to navigate online challenges safely. A big thank you to Andrew Bigland for his engaging session. Together, we’re creating informed, responsible digital citizens.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
